KS1 - Year 1
Welcome to our Year 1 class page ...
In Year 1 we have focused lessons daily which include; phonics, literacy, maths and RE as well as lots of opportunities to learn through play. PE and Spanish lessons are weekly. As in Reception, the children are given time in the provision areas to complete challenges and initiate their own learning through play.
We will be exploring two fantastic topics this term. In the first half term, children will study Land Ahoy! followed by Bright Lights, Big City in the second half of the term. We link and incorporate our 17 Sustainable Development Goals into our work.
RE will follow the 'Come and See' approach in which the Catechism of the Catholic Church addresses the search for meaning in life, God’s initiative in Revelation who comes to meet us and our response of faith. This pattern guides the structure of the programme and informs the process of each topic, opened up through; Explore, Reveal and Respond.
We invite you into the Year 1 class every Wednesday morning from 8:45 to read with your child. This session is a great opportunity to find out about your child's favourite story and to become familiar with the ORT reading scheme we use. The session will end at 9:30.
Please make sure that your children bring their book bags to school every day.
We follow the Read, Write Inc scheme in small focused groups. Read Write Inc. sessions are held at 9.00am daily. During the phonics sessions children learn new sounds with corresponding pictures. The children practice segmenting and blending words and writing them. Children move through the coloured books and learn more sounds as they go.
During maths in Year 1 we take a ‘small steps’ approach to make sure that the children fully embed the Year 1 curriculum. We use the Inspire Maths books, alongside lots of practical activities. There are also lots of opportunities for children to develop their skills independently within our maths area.
